Ink Blot Graphic
Introduction:
In this tutorial, we'll learn how to create an "Ink Blot Graphic" to use for our web or graphic related projects. This is a great graphic to use in blogs themes or logos, since it falls into the theme of using the pen for writing.
Step-By-Step:
1. Open a new document in photoshop. Set width/height to 250x250.
2. Create a new layer and name it "Ink Blot".
3. Select the Custom Shape tool (or just hit the letter U).
4. From the Custom Shape dropdown, select the shape titled "Blob 1" (as indicated in the green circle below):
5. Select black as your foreground color, then hold the shift key, and drag to make the ink blot shape.
6. Select the Eliptical Marquee tool and create a small circle selection outside the ink blot shape.
7. Fill in the circular selection with black.
8. Do this a few more times, with circle selections of various sizes outside of the ink blot shape.
9. When you are done, your ink blot should look similar to the graphic below:
10. Select the Eliptical Marquee tool and create a small circle selection in the center of the ink blot.
11. Click the Delete key.
12. Click CTRL + D to deselect all selections. Your image should now look like the following:
13. Double click the "Ink Blot" layer from the layer's palette to edit the Layer Styles.
14. Change the "Drop Shadow" properties to the following:
15. Change the "Inner Shadow" properties to the following:
16. Change the "Gradient Overlay" properties to the following:
17. Change the "Stroke" properties to the following:
18. Accept the changes to the Layer Styles and you should now have the following effect:
19. Create a new layer and name it "Gloss".
20. Select white as your foregrond color.
21. Just as you did in Steps 5, 6, and 7, drag the custom "Blob 1" shape so that it overlaps the underlying ink blot graphic.
Be sure to make it a bit smaller than the underlying ink blot graphic.
22. Select the Eliptical Marquee tool, hold down the Shift key, and drag a perfect circle selection around the bottom right of the white Blob 1 shape that you made in the previous step.
23. Hit the Delete key to remove the bottom right portion.
24. Select the Eraser tool. Choose a small brush size for the eraser.
25. Zoom in on the center circle of the ink blot graphic and remove the white area from the Gloss layer that is overlapping the circle.
26. Set the opacity of the "Gloss" layer to 40%.
27. Zoom out and you should now have your "Ink Blot Graphic".
28. You can always change the colors of the ink blot by going into the Layer Styles and changing the "Gradient Overlay" properties.
